Spring is in the air, and so is the heat at Yoga Body Shop! It is time to let your wellness journey bloom this season through the practice of hot yoga. But before you jump right into our heated flow there are a few things you should know.
What is Hot Yoga: Hot yoga is just like regular yoga, but with a twist or rather a blast of heat. The practice popularized in the 1970’s and is done in a super warm room where the heat is cranked up to about 100 degrees and the humidity levels range between 40%-60%. As you flow through the movements, you will find yourself sweating, simultaneously detoxing yourself and working out. Trust the process (and your instructor) and you will leave feeling more refreshed than ever.
Hot Yoga Benefits: Yoga on its own holds various benefits such as increased flexibility, strength, and focus. However, once that heat is cranked up the number increases. A few of those benefits include:
- Detoxifying your body: One of the main benefits of hot yoga is the increased level of sweat, but what most people don’t know is that some research has found that sweat can help purge the body of harmful toxins. Combining heat and rigorous movement stimulates the body’s sweat glands and promotes the release of toxins stored in the bodies tissue. This not only flushes out the toxins but leaves you feeling rejuvenated!
- Helping your heart: Not only do you sweat at hot yoga, but you’re increasing your heart health as well. Your heart muscle gets stronger, and your overall cardiovascular health is improved by rigorous movements and heat. Your risk of heart disease is decreased, it improves cholesterol and blood sugar levels by bettering your metabolism, and even lowers blood pressure.
- Increasing bone density: Bone density declines as you age, and although yoga on its own can help through factors such as weight support, hot yoga takes it to the next level. Research has found that pre- and post-menopausal women can both benefit from hot yoga to combat osteoporosis, as after 5 years of regularly practicing the women in the study increased their bone density in several parts of their bodies including the neck and hips.
